The Old City of Jerusalem

Amazing Sites Within the Walls

  • The Old City has the greatest concentration of holy sites among the three great monotheistic religions.

Each year, thousands are drawn to the old city of Jerusalem to take in the unique Jerusalem-stone walls, the towers and the breathtaking skyline of the domes.

The Old City of Jerusalem is divided into four quarters; the Jewish Quarter, the Christian Quarter, the Muslim Quarter and the Armenian Quarter.

    The Jewish Quarter
is the residential area for a thriving modern community. The Western Wall, the most significant site for the Jewish people since it is the last remnant of the Temple, is located in the Jewish quarter.
Today there are numerous schools for Jewish studies and synagogues, along with contemporary shops and restaurants in the streets.

The Christian Quarter is located in the northwest corner of the Old City and a home of churches, monasteries and more significant holy sites to Christians. This was built around the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site of Jesus's crucifixion, burial, and resurrection according to the New Testament.
You can find there also restaurants, coffee shops, souvenir shops, and hotels to serve the pilgrims and many tourists that visit the quarter.

The Muslim Quarter, the largest and most populous quarter of the old city's neighborhoods, includes Al-Aqsa Mosque, the temple mount, many of the Muslim religious institutions and organizations an impressive open door market and more. There are also several Christian religious institutions in the Muslim quarter, mainly in the Via Dolorosa which inhabited by monks and nuns.

The Armenian Quarter, located in the southwest corner of the Old city, is a home to an ancient community of 2,500 Armenians who have settled there around 300 CE.
The Armenian quarter includes The St. James Cathedral which was built in the 12th century and became the center for the Armenian community in Israel.
The Church of St James is one of the most beautiful churches in the country.
